Bonnie Sita, Director of the 12 year old East Bay Dance Center is making moves both on stage and in the community. “It’s a dance company and training school with an ulterior motive—to help kids develop deep self esteem, discipline, self-expression, cooperation, and leadership skills” says the company’s dynamic Director.
The Center uniquely combines “homework hour” with dance classes offering classes in jazz, ballet, tap and hip-hop along with “Dance Day Camps” held during school breaks. Now that’s some incentive to do homework!
In 1994, Mayor Eliju Harris designated May 22nd as “Move Dance Theatre (MDT) Day in Oakland” to recognize the Center’s professional company-in-residence on their Tenth Anniversary. Complementing this company, “MDT II” is a junior company which is comprised of young dancers who perform in Oakland public schools and for community events free of charge. This group offers pre-professional training for teens 11 and older for free. Other youth opportunities include the “Club Dance”, a monthly teen “drop in night” and the “Move Dance Theatre’s” teen apprentice program.
A dancer, choreographer and teacher, Ms. Sita combines her talents with her degree in Educational Psychology & Early Childhood Education, stating; “Our philosophy is that dance should be accessible to everyone as a recreational and artistic outlet and that it has the ability to uplift the spirit and unite diverse groups in the community.”
The Company’s “Young Dancers for Young Audience” program presents free assembly programs on the multicultural roots of jazz dance to Oakland school children. Besides their performances inspiring hundreds of their peers in the city, the company also grants scholarships to classes and makes donations to numerous schools and local community groups to benefit children. They encourage groups of seniors to enjoy their performances donating free tickets.
The company is supported by the Cultural Arts Division of the City of Oakland, Kaiser Permanente. The East Bay Dance Center has received the Community Peace Award for the efforts of its multicultural staff creating diverse and impactful programs for community youth. The Center was chosen as a member of the Mayor’s Sister City Delegation to Ocho Rios, Jamaice in 1996.
Women in Business salutes Bonnie Sita on May 22nd and encourages our entire business community to show our support for her worthy efforts.
