Asking for help is so hard for most people. It’s easy to give but to ask – ah well, we need help with that.
So, this post (from 2010) uses our blog platform to give my favorite clients & colleagues a place to test out a request for help. [While this is an old post, you’re welcome to test your request to see if you get some useful responses!]
I have confidence that at least one person will have a significant lead or fulfilled need within one week.
Haven’t you seen this past year’s economic depression cripple so many extraordinarily talented people who have radically struggled in their business? Some have lost jobs, homes, relationships, or their health.
Worse, the really worthy business owners have their confidence erode while forgetting the huge value they really offer their clients. We all go through this at some point in our businesses but to have it last for months depletes peoples’ ability to move forward. So, let’s all help each other instead.
This week let’s be insanely generous and share resources, ideas, actual referrals and connections. All of you who receive this have some genius to offer and are worthy of receiving huge rewards from participating. So, please join in.
WHAT TO DO
In the reply below, spell out clearly what you seek. Let us know how to contact you via email or phone. Bookmark this page so you can return periodically to help someone or find out if your request was answered. Put out some good karma and participate!
HERE’S AN EXAMPLE (BE VERY SPECIFIC)
Something our one-stop shop marketing agency is seeking: entrepreneurs leading organizations (ideally with staff size 10-20, but we help solopreneurs, too) who need more clients from results-oriented marketing: high level Strategic Business Planning, Websites, Social Media Management or Training, SEO, Blogs, Case Studies, Promo materials, web content, media articles or other communications. Details & prices are on our website.
Who do you know who needs our help? We can be reached via email.
YOUR TURN

With hope & belief in your collective genius!
_____________
What happened with this experiment?
50% got what they asked for just connecting through this blog – you can see for yourself below.
70% got what they asked for by commenting here and also emailing me to get more specifics on the person they wanted to help, to ask for an intro, phone number, or similar. A few emails initially said they were afraid to ask for what they wanted (from women, not men. no surprise there! men have no problems asking for what they want, it seems to me. OK, that’s commentary).
Take a look at comments below to see what happened. Marketing lesson: be clear what you ask for. It’s harder than you think.
My own story (what inspired this experiment):When I moved my business from San Francisco to the island of Alameda, 7 miles across the bay, I lost several clients just due to attrition. I reconsidered my positioning, services, how our agency’s services were offered, so I could rebuild the company’s revenues.
In so doing, I realized just one thing: I only wanted to work with “smart people”. I didn’t care their industry, financial situation, demographics, psychographics, or even geographics.
So, I just started asking friends, colleagues, people I met at networking events or conferences and clients to please refer smart people to our agency. Sounds naive, right?
Well, 9 years later and another move to Oakland, we still only work with smart people. Why? Because when you truly respect your clients & they appreciate you, everyone has success.
If you’re a marketing pro and now want to slap me for this experiment, I defy you to try it and email me your own results. You just never know! abliss@allisonbliss.com.
Take a look at comments below and offer your help or put forth your request – Fingers crossed for you.

I already had a client call me to offer a few referrals. See it’s working if you just put your request in here!

In these changing times I know so many extraordinary and talented people are struggling, especially ‘baby boomers’ who have done their career for 15 to 30 years and been excellent at it. When business gets as slow as it may have been in the last 15 months, it can be a HUGE self esteem killer! We start to ask ourselves, “Do I have value?” and a merriad of other self distructive non-productive and eroding questions. It gets really isolating and dangerous ‘in there’, Your head!
The last 17 months, since ‘the crash’, has created such an ENORMOUS Vacuum and many of us have lost our footing and feel like we’re in quicksand with no ‘ropes to go for’. After examining this dynamic intimately and at length, face to face for 15 months, my thought and assertion is; I think there is an enormous window of opportunity here. A window of opportunity as big as the vacuume!
If you relate to any of this, it’s my thought that the only way forward is through it. This may require a serious ‘re-look’ at ones business. I mean serious!, Totally ‘out of the box’ re-look in present time. Something ‘New’ is clearly being ‘called forward’. Old structures aren’t working and it is up to us to look in present time to see ‘What the vacuum is calling forward?’, and create new services, remedies and solutions to serve into it.
I think we have an amazing 2 year window of opportunity to re-invent new forms and avenues to serve, using our gifts and talents to create a new business paradigm . . . or is it “a pair of dimes to rub together?” It seems to me these are the only two choices.
Sincerely,
Denise Sims

Thanks for your request and your insight, Denise! May you get all you ask for. Who can help her?
ps. In my experience ‘Fear based thinking’ never works.
I was just thinking today that I need at least five new clients who have a need for office support staff,(either regular or temporary.) My company, Monroe Personnel Service LLC and Temptime is a 24 year old staffing agency located in San Francisco. (check out our reviews on citysearch or yelp for an idea of what we’re about.) My ideal client is a company which has a great environment, treats it’s employees really well, pays our bills on time or early and is fun and easy to communicate with. We have been really excellent at marketing our event staffing side of the business lately because it is new but I don’t want to stop developing what has always been our bread and butter. Thanks Allison! Psychic and brilliant idea.
Denise, You’re right! There is real opportunity in this new economy. YourBizLady.com is in early development, but the radio show is alive and well on Wednesday afternoons (noon pacific or 3pm eastern at RadioEarNetwork.com). Our mission is to provide the information small business owners need to be successful. We will be posting the radio shows and suggested resources soon. Watch for it!
For your website, check with the local colleges for their intern programs. Many students want a real-life opportunity to showcase their skills.
Cheers!
Shauna
Allison, thanks for this invitation to share in your brilliance. You and Denise Sims are so right! This is the time to strength our asking for help muscles and connect and collaborate on the void-like opportunities in front of us. For the path before us leads to our heart’s desire.
Your hope and belief in our collective genius resonates with the mind-shifting perspective of this Eden Phillpotts quote. “The universe is full of magical things, patiently waiting for our wits to grow sharper.”
To that end, I’m seeking…
* 3-5 smart women entrepreneurs, executives, and nonprofit leaders ready for an executive coach who helps them think and act more strategically, leverage their leadership, and innovate their business acumen to navigate the unchartered territory ahead. This frees them to zero in on the right focus, balance complex priorities, and gain greater effectiveness in creating more sustainable success. These savvy leaders determine the pace, which means that business and leadership coaching intensives as well as 3-6 month coaching programs are available for them and their teams.
Who do you know who needs this help? I can be reached at: sylvia@simplythebestcoaching.com
Thanks Shauna, so very supportive of you to give Denise some advice. Now, tell us what YOU want!
Thanks Shauna! Great idea. I’ll do that. I would like the site to appear innovative and a bit hip a groovy. That’s perfect.
Based on what you’re doing with radio show you may want to consider attending “What Now?” meeting tonight at 7pm to 9:30. Really Fabulous, talented and broad range of people. Really smoothed out group. The topic is #2 in a series of three on ‘social media’. How it serves us, how it doesn’t, how different age groups use social media and how it affects our relationships.
Attending tonight, ages 12 to 68!
If you would like to attend, email fyi@whatnowmeetings.com
Thanks again Shauna! Looking forward to hearing your show.
Great contributions everyone! Shauna is in Florida so it may be a bit tricky for her to come tonight, Denise. Shauna – please share the link to your radio show for us! Let us know who you’re seeking to interview since we may have your perfect candidate reading this blog request.
Allison
What a wonderful gift, bringing us all together here! Thank you!
What GoodBizChoice.com brings to the party: We eliminate the chaos of your UNdone projects.
“If I just had more time,” you tell yourself… Let’s face it, you don’t. But how are those projects – the very things that can make a difference to the success of your company – ever going to get done? There is an answer: All it takes is a little help from YourBizLady, Shauna VanderHoek. “I accomplished more in two hours with Shauna than I had in the past two weeks.” ~ GlutenFreeDee.com
Shauna VanderHoek (aka Shauna Vee) left the mega-corporate world in 2009 with a passion to help small businesses succeed beyond what they thought possible. “Shauna brought the ideal combination of organizational skills and intensity… done with a bright spirit and a big smile.” ~ Winn Dixie
Finally, small business can access the expertise of someone who has completed multimillion dollar projects for companies like Harrah’s Entertainment, PepsiCo, Fairchild Semiconductor, and Apple Computer. “I strongly recommended Shauna and all her expertise to all small, medium and large business looking for a great project manager and, more, a business consultant.” ~ Orlando First Class Transportation
What I’m looking for: Women business owners with 5 to 50 employees who are ready to shift their business from what has been (so far) to what is POSSIBLE… and have fun along the way. Contact me at shauna@GoodBizChoice.com or 941-527-3589.
“Top-notch project management skills… Has benefited the entire team.” ~ OppenheimerFunds
Hi ladies. Ah yes, the radio show. When I left corporate a year ago, I found established businesses who still were operating without some basic business information, so I launched YourBizLady (radio show and website, still in development) to help provide that info for business owners who couldn’t afford my services. The show is Business Helping Business; you share your knowledge with other business owners so they can DO whatever needs to be done. (Of course, once they realize they really need an expert, they will turn to you.)
The show airs weekly on Wednesday at 3 p.m. Eastern time at radioearnetwork.com. This station is listened to across the US, and is marketed to the Florida Gulf Coast and the greater Miami area. The shows are repeated during the middle of the night, gathering an increasing market share of a European audience.
In the next iteration of my website, the shows will be on each expert’s page, ready for replay.
If you have something you’d love to share with other businesses, please go to YourBizLady.com, click on the Experts button on the right, and fill in the blanks. Let’s have fun!
What I need is someone who has experience in creating successful Facebook campaigns for small business owners. I need someone to help me navigate the best way to utilize Facebook for my business and set up a strategy that I can manage myself.
On another note, if anyone is looking to buy, sell or recycle a mannequin, give me a call I can help with that
Denise, you might be able to coordinate with teaching staff at a local business and/or computer science school program to offer students an opportunity to do a real world project, where they could really experience the benefit of and be empowered by their work. I did this in Morocco when I was teaching electrical theory and wiring to young men (16-18). They needed to gain practical experience, so I arranged with the director of an orphanage to have my students completely rewire the entire compound for free if he would pay for materials. This orphanage had a very dire need; their electrical system was a complete disaster, and the only reason the large compound hadn’t had an electrical fire and burned to the ground was because the buildings were all brick and plaster. Little kids of 7 and 8 had to cross bare hot wires (220 volts) with their bare hands to turn on a 40-watt lightbulb (the sole light source for a long dorm room lined with rows of bunkbeds), getting a huge shock each time. It was a nasty situation.
Because labor cost would have been by far the biggest cost component, the director was overjoyed for this opportunity. My kids got to transform the place with much better lighting (including lights on their soccer field!) and an elimination of the fire hazard. Doing this instead of building circuits on a blank workshop wall was far more rewarding for them, and best of all, three of my students lived in the orphanage, so they became direct beneficiaries of the project.
Now for my need: I conduct environment review of proposed development projects; I’m the guy who writes the Environmental Impact Reports (EIRs) you hear about. I need one EIR project, or a couple of smaller projects (Mitigated Negative Declarations–they’re like mini-EIRs) to see me through the next 3 to 6 months. I also do contract planning for cities and counties, so managing a large project on behalf of one of those types of jurisdictions would also be welcome work.
Good luck to everyone.
Great story, Doug – and this experiment is surprising me: I thought you guys would have trouble asking for what you wanted. I applaud everyone else who’s asking and advising. OK – who do you guys know that you can connect for each other? While this blog is just for my invited group, you’re certainly welcome to send it along if you have a lead or an answer from any friends or colleagues! Let’s find 1) renters for mannequins and a facebook expert 2)a project that needs Shauna V. to manage it 3) people who need an image update for Denise 4) women leaders for Sylvia and Ali and 5) some employees who need great temps from Debra! WE’VE GOT 3 DAYS LEFT TO GET RESULTS!
Doug
I can refer you to a friend in Florida…. or do you work strictly in the Bay Area?
Judi, for Facebook, try Michelle Price http://www.socialmediasavvy.com. Tell her Shauna sent you! (No idea what her prices are, but she’s been highly recommended to me by several different people.)
Shauna,
No, I generally work anywhere in California (though most of my projects tend to be in the Bay Area). My skills are transferable, so I’m certainly willing to do work in Florida.
Sylvia and Ali,
I’m going to forward this blog to a friend who works in a leadership position in a non-profit organization; it’s possible she might be interested in your services.
Hi, Everyone –
I am an investment advisor/financial planner who works with widows, divorcees, and other women who suddenly find themselves having to make the financial decisions for the first time in their lives (though I work with other types of clients as well). I am located in California, but I have clients across the country.
I use a risk-conscious investment approach that has resulted in my clients’ accounts having regained their pre-crash values.
I am a fee-only advisor, which means I don’t take any commissions or sell any products. I have been managing money for 10 years. (References are available on request.) I charge 0.60% per year, compared with the industry average of 1%.
I plan to limit my practice to thirty clients, so I can provide individualized attention to each client. I will take on just three new clients this calendar year.
I am looking for three new clients with investable assets of $1,000,000 to $5,000,000. I’m the perfect advisor for someone’s mother who has just lost her husband.
Thanks, Allison, for inviting me to participate!

I am the media business and produce and direct projects for television, webcasting-streaming, dvds and live events for non profit and commercial organizations. My nonprofit world has vanished as I was producing projects for various departments at UCSF and the Francis F. Curry Tuberculosis center in SF. What I need is to find are nonprofits that need to produce a dvd or streaming project for their audience who maybe patients and/or employees.
Thanks Doug!
Frank, do you travel? I’m involved with an emerging non-profit that plans to take their event and program to 10 cities over the course of a year (starting this fall)
Sue, love that you are fee-only! I will keep my ears open for you.
Namaste
great to get your input, Sue. We’ll all keep an ear open for your target client, knowing you’ll take such good care of them!
Shauna, I do travel and have worked in the major cities in the US and Canada. My expertise is producing live events and teleconferencing, webcasting and audio bridging these events. Webcasting seems to be the way to go because you know how many people are watching and when. Would love to talk to you to see if it is the right fit.
Hi Everyone,
I am a Coach who specializes in helping new parents deal with the changes they experience in their relationship after their child is born and am always looking for new clients to support in this area.
My big dream request – I have written a booklet – 52 Tips to Rekindle Your Relationship After Your Child Is Born and would like to speak to the decision makers about it at places such as Babies ‘R Us, Pampers, Gerber’s, Graco, Fisher Price, First Years, etc.
I’m looking for a contact at any of these places or other companies in the baby business, to get me in the door. Even if the contact is a receptionist, that can give me the ability to eventually reach the right person/people.
I can be reached at linda@parentsinlove.com or 310-375-4800
Thanks so much and I hope everyone here receives what they need!
Ali, this is a brilliant idea and what a gift you’ve given!
Blessings,
Linda
Thanks, Shauna and Allison! I really appreciate your support. I will be on the lookout for women business owners for both of you…

Sadly they already have a director (or I’d have referred you, NATURALLY!) but they’re seeking a stage manager. I’ve not done live specials for so long I’m not sure I’m qualified. So wondered if you could refer someone to them. I’ll email you the info. SEE PEOPLE, CONNECTIONS ARE HAPPENING!

Thanks! I really appreciate the referrals.
Hi Juli,
Mari Smith is a Facebook marketing expert, whom Fast Company has called the “Pied Piper of Facebook.” Mari is very approachable. Although she lives in the San Diego area, you can check her out on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/marismith where you’ll find some useful resources. There’s also a current social media guide, The Zen of Social Media Marketing: An Easier Way to Build Credibility, Generate Buzz, and Increase Revenue written by Shama Kabani. She has been dubbed by Fast Company as “an online marketing shaman.” Hope either or both of these resources are useful.

Barbara,
Your clients need to lok and feel great about themselves before leaving the house for a date!
I am confident I can not only make them look beautiful, they will feel ‘Fabulous’ about themselves!
Transformational work.
Denise
Miriam,
Kathleen may be a good person to allow space for this event. She has a beautiful Healing Center in Pleasant hill and does some Terot work with clients. An ‘in depth’ learnign session may be a ‘good match’ for her clients.

Thanks, Allison, for thinking of me!!
I help celebrities write their memoirs and am looking for my next amazing client. I learned about great storytelling from the Master Storyteller himself, Sidney Sheldon, who dictated to me his 18th and final novel (“Are You Afraid of the Dark?”) and his memoir (“The Other Side of Me”). I have helped a retired Hollywood director craft his book, and for the past 18 months, I’ve been working with a world-famous hairdresser on his autobiography, which is due out this September.
I love being in the trenches, crafting the story in person, one sentence at a time. I help my clients dig deep and go way below the surface of their story to find their heart – and I help them do this all in their own unique voice.
I also work as Author Concierge for the Wealthy Writer’s Wisdom Seminar, an on-line writers’ training course for new writers created by Mark Victor Hansen, co-author of “Chicken Soup for the Soul.” Translated into English that means I am the book coach for all the participants in the program.
While I love working with celebrities and that’s where the majority of my experience lies, I welcome collaborating with anyone who has an interesting life story to tell. If that’s you or anyone you know, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
I look forward to hearing from you!!
Doug,
Thanks so much for your suggestion and great inspiring storey!
I’ll follow up at Laney or SF city college. They have good media depts.
Mary!
How can you be reached?
Sylvia,
Thanks for the reference to Mari Smith for F/B help. I didn’t state that on “What I want”, but that is on my list.
Thanks!
Allison – a brilliant idea and you know how much I like collaboration!!!
Denise – my business partner and I just closed our LLC and had to do the onerous closing of books and final tax prep. We had an excellent experience with Lynn Johnston and worked easily with her without travel. Here’s her info:

OK – here’s what I want. Minimum of 7 opportunities to lead this timely, fun and beneficial workshop that Allison once attended and still comments on! I’m in the final phase of doing my dissertation on how improvisation improves team collaboration. Experts indicate that learning to collaborate well builds innovation, shared bodies of knowledge, and improved team functioning. Learning improvisational theater skills provides direct metaphors for everyday work activities since when we work together, we move, visualize, reflect, mimic, imagine, and tell stories. Innovation and collaboration are two key development areas being identified as critical for businesses and non-profits alike.
Booking these workshops would really make my year joyful and abundant!
Unlocking the Heart of Collaboration, a highly interactive workshop for teams or for individuals interested in collaborating, uses an unconventional mix of self-assessment, improvisational games, and reflective dialog to provide participants with critical insights on the core attributes for real work collaboration, information on their personal strengths and development areas, and tips to improve leadership and partnering skills.
This 3- hour session integrates the partnering attributes of Stephen Dent and InterPlay, an improvisational approach applied to group and organizational development. This workshop can also be presented in academic settings
Workshop presenter Nika Quirk, M.B.A. and Certified InterPlay Leader, is a social entrepreneur, masterful InterPlay leader, adjunct college faculty, small business consultant and EveryDay Leadership coach. She lives an integrated life and has buckets of creativity, experience, know-how. A self-defined “pragmatic optimist”, her mission is to inspire ease, daily action and stepping into leadership in these turbulent times we live in.
Thanks to new contributors: Mary, Fern, Sue, Linda & Nika. congrats on being able to express exactly what you seek.
How about we all go through our databases and contact lists (just spend 10 minutes!) to find matches for those who’ve not got leads above, yet.
For those of you referring to others, please know that we have a social media action tool (even uses some of the great techniques Mari has shared w. me! but also includes facebook and twitter details) that has a 5 day implementation plan: https://allisonbliss.comservices.htm#socialmedia.
We also build websites, (yes, helping Denise on her professional site now!), blogs, and consult with businesses who need more revenues while saving time & cost from doing marketing the wrong way: https://allisonbliss.com.
Great input everyone! Keep it up! Be sure to subscribe to this blog so you get notified if others respond to your request. (subscribe via email in upper right hand corner. nope we don’t sp*m you!)
Thanks Denise! I think I know Kathleen from a few years ago!
Miriam
Sylvia, Thanks for the referral to Mari. FaceBook is becoming more important, so I’d better get busy!
Nika, if you ever do a workshop in Florida, let me know. I’d love to attend, and I’ll help get the word out.
Speaking of Florida, my work – helping you plan and complete the projects important to you and your business – can be done anywhere. I’m currently working with a client in Colorado. (Frank, I expect you will be hearing from her. She liked the info I forwarded about you.)
Cheers!
Shauna Vee
Nika! Thanks for the referral.
Miriam! That’s funny. When I read what you do, I thought, “These 2 should know eachother.” Didn’t know you had met in the past already.
All the best.
Cheers!
Allison,
It has been a good week. I got a referral from you, I got call from China about a possible project and Shauna and I may collaborate on a future project. I had a successful pitch meeting today. It all feels good. Your Brilliant.
Clarification on one thing ‘I want’ – A new accountant. Trustworthy, reliable and affordable who lives in or near Alameda and can come to my home office once a month. They need to Know quicken on Mac.
***
Allison,
Barbara and I spoke briefly. We’ll talk next week. I think our clients have mutual need for each of our services.
Thanks Allison and Barbara!
Allison,
Thanks for including me in this discussion/chance-to-ask-for-favors forum.
I’m a messaging/content strategist and copywriter here in San Francisco. I’m looking to connect with five agencies, be they marketing, branding, advertising or interactive. But not just “any” agency. I seek to work with people who understand the value of developing content/messaging strategies as an integral aspect of any project.
Also, agencies who understand that content/writing is not a commodity service, and how it ultimately helps their clients with what matters most – increasing awareness, leads and sales.
Typical job titles for referrals are Creative Director, Art Director, Designer, and Account Manager.
Thanks in advance for any possible leads. In the meantime, I’ll dig through everyone’s wish list and see how I can return the favor. If you’re wondering who I am, you can learn more about me at thecomposer.com
All the best,
James
Lucky for you all I got the flu so we’ll keep this quest going for another week before I have time to sum up the results of this experience and open it up to the public. Have a great weekend, all. Please do come back to this page if you have something else to request or someone to help.
I’m coming to the party late. What I’m looking for are clients who need customs signs for their business location, for their vehicle or even for their home or vacation spot. A shopping center or business park property manager who can recommend me to their in-moving tenants would be perfect.
If you’re thinking “Why would I need a sign?”, consider this:
– Signs are an effective, yet inexpensive, form of advertising for the small business.
– A sign is your introduction and handshake with those passing by, identifying your business to existing and potential customers.
– Signs are always “on the job” for you, advertising 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
– People often judge a business by how it looks on the sign.
– Many merchants increase their business measurably just by adding a good sign. Conversely, many have gone out of business because they simply were not identified well, so not enough potential customers knew of their existence.
– We live in a mobile society. According to the United States Census Bureau, 18% of households relocate each year. As your customers move, you need to replace them by attracting new customers.
My work can be seen in Alameda and Palo Alto as well as on awnings from Capitola to Oakland. A sampling is available on my website: http:/kerrysigns.com and here: http://www.facebook.com/KerrySigns
