Walking Revolution: Improve Your Business & Your Brain Simultaneously

WE’RE CREATING A REVOLUTION TO GET AMERICA WALKING.

We want to get butts out of seats so people can become smarter, solve problems faster and follow their bliss in life and work.

SCIENTIFIC STUDIES SHOW INCREASED BRAIN FUNCTION FROM WALKING

The LA times story “Take Your Brain Out for a Walk” reported on scientific studies validating this theory of mine. And if you’re reading this, you’ve probably already experienced the benefits of walking!

In my experience, walking enables people to:

  • put their feet on the earth to get creative ideas,
  • solve problems faster,
  • raise their oxygen levels to reduce stress,
  • more easily express themselves (if walking with others) to gain support or feedback,
  • overcome resistance because it’s hard to restrain thoughts or great ideas while you’re walking.  I have a theory about this. . .

While I have not yet found any scientific studies proving this, I believe that new neuro connectors are grown in our brains as a result of visual stimuli through our peripheral vision. In other words, while you’re moving through space your peripheral sends signals to some creative, problem-solving area of your brain that enables us to figure things out better when we’re walking.

I did find one study on improved brain connectivity (easier to put thoughts together, to oversimplify it) at Frontiers for Aging Neuroscience. But I’m still seeking studies on the peripheral vision connection.

I’ve not had this experience biking or running, though. Have you?

lagoon walkWALKING OUR TALK

We developed actual guided ‘creative walking sessions’ to help CEO’s and business leaders, our clients, more rapidly and joyfully solve  business problems – those we all get stuck with when we just need someone with experience to walk us (pun intended) to an answer.

For decades, I’ve walked with friends to sort out their business or relationship problems, so I finally realized a walking consultation would be far, far more meaningful that sitting around an office. It was. It still is. Now dozens of businesses are  participating in our “Walk With Bliss: Idea Lab” strategy walks.

NOMINATED FOR INNOVATION

Leading business and marketing expert, Seth Godin nominated this walking consultation (the Idea Lab Walks) as a top innovator for his Domino Project. Across the nation, people are getting aboard this idea, getting away from their computers, reactivating their imagination and brains with fresh air and broad perspective.

ENLIVEN WORKERS AND STUDENTS

To inspire all corporations and schools to free students or workers’ creative genius by leaving their chairs behind, we’d like share your experiences with walking:

  • problems solved,
  • attitudes adjusted,
  • anger, stress or fear reduced
  • children calmed,
  • abilities to absorb new information heightened,
  • or whatever creative genius you experience.

Maybe walking is just too distracting for you and disaffects your ability to think clearly?

Whatever you have to share will be helpful in our own informal study on walking and brainpower.

WE’RE DOING OUR OWN STUDY. UNDERFUNDED SCIENCE IS TOO SLOW!

Please comment below so we can all benefit from your own experiences and wisdom. After all, Knowledge is Bliss, right?

Walking Revolution: Improve Your Business & Your Brain Simultaneously — 18 Comments

  1. You’ve hit on it, Allison. I definitely get energized and motivated while walking. The brainstorming sessions I’ve done with you while walking were great. Yes, there’s freedom to let ideas come out, hover, stay if they’re good, or fly away if they aren’t. That freedom is not found as much in conference rooms, on monitors, or conference calls, in my experience.

I, personally, am not in good enough shape to brainstorm while riding a bike, or treadmilling at the the gym, so I can’t speak to that.

As to the peripheral vision theory, I’m not sure. I remember that when living in a very different culture in Bali, there were movements that happened in the periphery of my vision that became—well, I guess the word would be habitual. They happened often, but I didn’t really recognize how deeply ingrained they were until I went home and noticed their absence. I’m not sure if these movements stimulated the thinking/problem solving parts of my brain or not, but I definitely became aware of that part of my vision. So I wouldn’t rule your theory out, but I’d like to hear more about why you think it’s so.

Definitely agree with the walking as stimulating and good for mind and body. Yes, indeed!

  2. Allison: You are talking the walk now! Love it. All the years we have walked together were rich in reflection and always fun but never really paid attention to the positive outcomes.

I love the idea of actually pinpointing all of the benefits. Walking and hiking have always been one of my main prescriptions for stress reduction and unhooking from the “cement brain”. I’ll give you a simple non business example that translates for me in my business as well when I am trying brainstorm new topics to write about, when I am stuck on what to do next, when I am resisting follow up with my clients and colleagues. Here’s the simple example. I love crossword puzzles. I’ll get to a road block and think I am done – can’t find the words to the rest. I go out to breath, walk and enjoy my surroundings and voila, when I return, I wonder why I was so stupid. How did I miss the most obvious. You get the idea!

Best to you. Hope you get more than 400 responses! Hugs.

  3. Thanks Louise, Renee and Janet for your comments and thoughtful feedback. Quite interesting, Renee, about peripheral images in Bali. I’ll have to ask some vision scientists about that and report back to you. Ah Janet, I miss our brain-building walks and wonder if it’s having your doggie along that made it all that much more fun? What if we all could do our jobs while walking dogs along the ocean, talking into e-recorders that were auto transcribed into emails, reports, whatever. Ah, life would be so grand – that’s my personal goal!

  4. Emotions are physiological; they happen in the body. When we move the body, the energy trapped by unconscious emotions starts to flow. This physical movement not only energizes us physically and mentally, it activates positive emotional flow. The emotions of passion and joy are often activated while moving.

For years, walking has been my favorite mode of clearing brain clutter and getting inspired, where I can get out of my own way. My most creative ideas come while walking. So the concept of a guided creative walking session with a specific intention is brilliant. It’s one of those, “Duh! Why did anyone do this before?”

This is such a brilliant idea I took advantage of it as soon as Allison explained what she was doing and it opened up an exciting new focus for my work with lots of details to help put it into place.

  5. I would walk more if my feet did not hurt so much but when I tell my body that the benefits will prove more than the discomfort, it usually works. I find that the act of walking feeds my spirit, if I do this with awareness. It is best if I am one with time and space, or in the now, and not focused on mundane concerns. In this way, it is more like floating/walking.

I also want to put in a plug for bike riding since I also use that as a mediation and a way to be in the now. When I bike to work, I arrive a lot more together and ready to take on tasks. I feel that it wakes everything up as opposed to driving which is a totally different state of mind.
Thanks Allison for bringing this message to the front.

  6. Whenever I am on the phone with clients, I am always on my feet, pacing, walking, sometimes taking advantage of the wirelessness, and going to the back yard, seeing how far from the base the phone will allow me.

I can’t imagine being stationary; I need to have my blood pumping and be up literally thinking on my feet.

  7. Thanks Clif, Ian, Jennifer & Joie; Very interesting feedback from people in so many professions: emotions, art, communication, accounting – intersting that this technique works no matter what business you’re in, or what you use it for, huh?

Appreciate the feedback and hope you’ll pass this quest along so we can get a large cross section of input. T

rying to get enough data and input to perfect the actual ‘guided walk experience’ – it’s a special process, like a movie with a peak of excitement and a denouement of collecting thoughts back into the body towards the end. APPRECIATE EVERYONE’S COMMENTS!!!

  8. People who are not being active get ‘told’ they should get more exercise everywhere they turn. This opening line may not pull that type of potential client in as you hope. The article seem to read fine without it, actually.

You could begin with the part about the LA Times and then make more specific mention of how you are applying the physicality of walking outdoors to improved business thinking.

Hope that is helpful. People need to feel “pulled in” by the advantages of exercise, being “pushed” hasn’t worked as well (on a national level).

  9. A few years ago I participated in the 3 Day Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer walk. This walk is a total of 60 miles over 3 days. To prepare my feet for this event, I walked and walked and walked. Whether I walked solo or in the company of others, the creative ideas were always flowing and my ability to practice active listening was heightened. I often felt that walking was the place to conjure up the million dollar idea. Thanks for the reminder that I need to get back out there!

This is a great idea Ali. I see a walk in our future…

  10. Walking definitely boosts brain power. It clears my mind and frees space for hidden connections to emerge. I’ve experienced faster problem solving and release from resistance on your ‘Money in Motion: Creative Strategy Walks’. So I recommend them highly for business owners ready for easier access to innovative solutions.

  11. Allison, you’re definitely on to something. I’m reading The Secret Life of the Grown Up Brain, by Barbara Strauch. She describes the neuroscience of how exercise stimulates the growth of new brain cells – which are more open to new ideas than cells which are already busy, to oversimplify terribly.
My experience is that physical movement definitely promotes metaphorical movement of ideas, images, stuck patterns, life energy. And walking (or other bipedal exercise) balances the hemispheres of the brain, which contributes to perspective, creativity, balance, and pleasure.

Do you know Betsy Burroughs of FocusCatalyst? She has a long history of walking brainstorming, and her site has a section on the neuroscience. http://www.focuscatalyst.com

  12. Thanks Margo, Jessi, Sylvia and Deborah. What fascinating perspectives you all have. And I’d never thought of ‘brain balancing’ from bipedal activity, Deborah: fascinating. . . especially coming from an expert and highly advanced knowledge expert like you! Jessi- look forward to our walk and hearing about your million dollar idea, too!

Appreciate everyone sharing their experiences, thanks so much!

  13. Wonderful article – makes me want to stop typing and get out for a walk! But seriously, I firmly believe that some of my best thinking and great ideas came from getting up and moving around. It is a great idea to give your brain a vacation from this computer box!

  14. Ali, what a great idea! I know I’m as far from a power walker as you can imagine, but if I get bogged down, frustrated, tired or hit writer’s block, I’ll take a break and go for a walk…preferably with a doggie at the end of a leash! If I am walking with my husband, we always “brainstorm” and do come up with creative solutions.
So yeah, scietific enough for me!
